Why a BMW 135i Makes a Great Tuner Car

A twin-turbo straight-six makes serious power with the right mods.

Many car enthusiasts were upset when BMW added turbochargers to its straight-sixes, claiming their famously linear power delivery would be compromised. In their complaints, they ignored one of the greatest benefits to turbocharging: Tunability.
You can do a lot with BMW's N54 twin-turbo straight-six as Matt Farah finds out in this latest One Take video, which features a 135i that makes around 400 hp. All it takes to make this kind of power is a handful of bolt-on parts, E40 fuel, a JB4 tune and an ECU flash. Not a lot of work to make around 100 more horsepower than stock.
This car's owner upgraded the suspension with Koni Yellow shocks and H&R springs and fit a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports to cope with the extra power. With this level of easy upgradability, tuners should give serious consideration to the 135i. In stock form, the 1 Series is one of the best modern BMWs, but with just a little work, it's good enough to make an M car sweat.
